Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse

A Support group for the lighthouse in Fenwick Island, Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland

While the lighthouse is actually in the State of Delaware and is, today, owned by the State, it is located adjacent to the Delaware and Maryland state line. It is so close to Ocean City that people there like to think of it as their lighthouse, too. Can you blame them?

In the photograph above the lighthouse and the two supporting structures, the Keeper’s House and the Assistant Keeper’s House (now privately owned) are in Fenwick Island, Delaware. However, the street and the sidewalk you see in the foreground are in Ocean City, Maryland.

The “New” Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse was formed in 2007 and has a website at https://fenwickislandlighthouse.org/. They have a Facebook page but is does not appear to be maintained or updated on a regular basis.

The “Friends” website presents a history of the lighthouse and other information. The volunteers of the group provide open tours of the grounds and interior of the lighthouse – ah, but, no climbing of the stairs. The Light is open (or was open in 2022) according to the following schedule. Note that they are closed when it rains.

Memorial Day Weekend: Sat & Sun 9am to 12pm
June 1 to June 30: Fri, Sat, Sun 9am to 12pm
July 1 to August 31: Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon 9am to 12pm
Sept 1 to Sept 30: Fri, Sat & Sun  9am to 12pm

The lighthouse was 163 years old on August 1, 2022.

  1. I don’t know why we didn’t visit this lighthouse when we went to Ocean City. A massive missed opportunity! Great story – I had no idea it straddled the border of the states. And congratulations of getting the website name. I’m sure you will get lots of visitors because of the closeness to the volunteer one.

    1. Thank you for commenting, Steve. Hey – next trip to the beach you’ll need to at least stop to see it. I’m hoping to make the site informative enough, in it’s own right, to attract visitors.
